Acorn Class (Reception)

Welcome to Acorn Class!  Here little acorns learn how to grow into might oaks, with strong roots and an opportunity to embed a love of learning in an environment which will inspire and develop curiosity.

We provide your child with a safe and fun place to learn. We work with each and every child, in multiple ways to suit their learning needs and to ‘be the best that they can be’.  Every journey taken is as unique as the child. The children will experience a variety of learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom to enhance and develop their understanding, knowledge and skills. We are passionate about following our children’s fascinations and interests and enjoy each day’s learning journey.

Our curriculum is explored seven areas of learning which are split into three prime areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication and Language and Physical Development. As well as four specific areas: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design, as well Child-led exploration explored and developed through our Choose Our Own Learning (COOL TIME).

Children in the early years rarely explore subjects discreetly as so much of early learning is multi-fascinated, for example, using pegs and boards to make a picture would include mathematical knowledge of shape and form, fine motor skills to hold and manipulate beads, creative development to understand how to put the shapes together as well as communication skills to discuss what they have created!  We revisit and rehearse the skills taught in our directed sessions practising those skills in our play, and becoming part of the school community.

Our PE session this half term is on a Tuesday afternoon will be Bikeability. After half term the PE session will change to a Thursday afternoon and with work on developing core skills.

In the Early Years the partnership between home and school is key to happy, settled children who love to be in school. Please do come and discuss and queries you may have after school or arrange an appointment via the school office.

Reception Curriculum - Autumn Term

Personal Social Emotional Development

Our focus is on supporting children to be able to recognise different emotions and be able to seek support from adults. Children will work on developing confidence to speak to peers and adults about their needs. As a class we will be learning to develop friendships.

Communication and Language

We will practice being able to understand how to listen carefully and know why it is important. Working on gaining confidence to be able to talk in front of small groups, and their teacher, offering their own ideas. Children will be developing their understanding of how to understand and ask how and why questions. During our school day children will practice and use new vocabulary.

Personal Development

Gross Motor Skills: children will be learning to move safely in a space. Explore different ways to travel using equipment. Fine Motor Skills: this term we will be learning to use tripod grip when using mark making tools as well as practicing learning to accurately draw lines, circles and shapes to draw pictures.

Literacy

In Literacy we would like children to be able to independently look at a book, holding it the correct way and turning pages. To develop engagement and enjoyment an increasing range of books both fiction and non-fiction.  In phonics children will be beginning to segment and blend sounds together to read words and captions. In their writing we encourage children to give meanings to the marks they make and develop correct letter formation.

Maths

In Maths we will focus on building strong foundations in number sense, counting, sorting, comparing, and simple patterns. Children will explore maths through play and practical activities, helping them develop confidence, curiosity, and a secure understanding of early mathematical concepts.

Understanding the world

Children will learn about themselves, their local community, different times in history, and how things around them grow and change. They also explore different environments, families, transport, and begin to build vocabulary to describe these things.

Expressive Arts and Design

We will be experimenting with paints, collage, drawing, building, and modelling using different tools and materials. We will explore the art of Miro. They take part in imaginative role-play, acting out stories and everyday experiences to build creativity and confidence. Children also enjoy music and movement, singing songs, trying instruments, and responding to rhythm.
